Is Your Sample Ready? Prep Checklist
Avoid Delays, Get Results Faster
Poorly prepared samples slow down testing, increase costs, and sometimes make results invalid. By following a simple preparation checklist, clients can avoid delays and ensure their AS 4586:2013 slip test results are delivered quickly and accurately.
Slip resistance testing under AS 4586:2013 requires samples that are representative, stable, and properly prepared. Missing details or sending incomplete samples is one of the most common causes of delay in certification.
Why Preparation Matters
Accurate slip resistance results depend on consistent surface condition. If a tile arrives chipped, unlabelled, or freshly coated without curing time, the data won’t reflect how the surface performs in service. That means re-testing, extra freight, and wasted time.
The Zerofal Prep Checklist
1. Correct Size
- ☐ Supply tiles or surface samples of at least 200mm x 200mm.
- ☐ Supply five (5) different specimens of the same material.
- ☐ Larger samples (e.g. 500mm) are preferable where available.
2. Labelling
- ☐ Clearly label each sample with surface type, batch number, and finish.
3. Cleaning
- ☐ Wash samples with pH-neutral detergent and water.
- ☐ Do not alter or polish surfaces beyond normal preparation.
4. Coatings and Sealants
- ☐ Only apply coatings if they are representative of the final installation.
- ☐ Ensure coatings or adhesives have fully cured (typically 7–14 days).
5. Packing and Freight
- ☐ Securely pack samples to prevent edge chipping.
- ☐ Use Zerofal’s national
Common Issues That Cause Delays
- Samples arriving unlabelled or mixed across batches
- Sending only small cuttings (<100 mm) which are unsuitable for pendulum or dry friction tests
- Coatings sent before curing time has elapsed
- Samples damaged in transit due to poor packing
The Benefit of Getting It Right
- Faster turnaround of results
- Lower chance of re-testing or rejection
- Certifiable reports that withstand compliance checks
